Yes, Pompeii works as a day trip from Rome, but it is a long day. Our guided tour runs about twelve hours with transport, a guide and entry organised; doing it yourself by train means a fast train to Naples and then a local line, with a few extra hours of planning. Pick the tour if you want the logistics handled, and the train if you want freedom and are happy to organise.

For the history and what to look at, see our Pompeii destination guide. This page is about getting there and choosing how.

Our selection is small

We list one Pompeii day trip from Rome, the Pompeii Day Trip from Rome. We would rather show you one tour we can describe honestly than pad this page. The listing gives a 06:30 departure from the Roma Termini area, arrival at Pompeii around 09:30, free time from 12:30, departure at 15:30 and return to Rome around 19:00. It lists a small group of up to 20 and a moderate difficulty. Treat those times as indicative, as the listing does.

Tour or train?

Guided tour Do it yourself by train
Transport Coach there and back, arranged High-speed train to Naples, then the Circumvesuviana to Pompei Scavi
Entry Site entry included Buy your own ticket
Guide Guide in Pompeii None unless you book separately
Time on site Fixed schedule with free time As long as you like, within train times
Effort Low Medium: trains, connections, crowds

Our destination guide puts the high-speed train from Rome Termini to Naples at about 70 minutes, followed by a local train to Pompei Scavi. Door to door that adds up to roughly three hours each way independently. Strikes happen, so check schedules the day before, and keep valuables close on the crowded local line.

Is a guided tour of Pompeii worth it?

For most first-time visitors, yes. The site is large, there is little explanatory text, and it is easy to wander without grasping what you are looking at. A guide chooses a route, shows you the paved streets, the forum, the baths and the better-preserved houses, and explains how people lived and how the AD 79 eruption buried the town. Our tour has a guide in Pompeii and then free time to revisit sights and have lunch. The trade-off is a fixed schedule.

How long is the day?

Allow twelve to thirteen hours with a coach tour. You will spend several hours on the road, with about three to four hours on site depending on the schedule. If you go independently, plan a similar total. For a full-day comparison, see full-day tours in Rome.

Can you do Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast in one day?

Some operators sell combinations, but they are rushed, with a lot of coach time and little time at either place. Pick one for a day trip, or stay overnight in the area. If you are torn, read Pompeii vs Amalfi Coast day trip or the Amalfi Coast day trip from Rome page.

What to bring and what to expect

  • Sun protection: there is very little shade. Bring water, a hat and sun cream.
  • Shoes: walking shoes. The paving is uneven and the site is big.
  • Food: lunch is not included in our tour. Eat at a cafe by the site or bring something.
  • Heat: in July and August the afternoon is intense. Spring and autumn are more comfortable.
  • Extras: the Vesuvius add-on is optional and excluded from the tour price.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Trying to see all of Pompeii. Choose a few areas and take your time.
  • Planning a tight return train with no buffer.
  • Assuming every house is open. Some open on rotation.
  • Skipping water and shade planning.
  • Booking a combined Pompeii and Amalfi day and expecting to enjoy both.

Is it a good fit for you?

  • Tour: first-timers, history fans, anyone who prefers not to manage trains. Minimum age on the listing is 6.
  • Train: confident independent travellers who like flexibility and do not mind a long day.
  • Neither: if you only have a short trip, Ostia Antica vs Pompeii may suit you better, since Ostia Antica is close to Rome.

Check current details: ticket prices, opening hours and train times change. Confirm them on the official Pompeii site and the rail operator’s site before travel. More ideas: Rome day trips.
