You can do the Amalfi Coast as a day trip from Rome, but it is a very long day: our listed tour runs about fourteen hours, most of it on the road, for a few hours in Positano and Amalfi. It suits you if you have one day and want to see the coast at all. If you can spare a night, staying on the coast is usually the better trip.

For the towns themselves, read our Amalfi Coast guide.

Our selection is small

We list one tour, the Amalfi Coast Day Trip from Rome. The listing gives an early departure from the Termini area at 06:30, Positano at about 10:30, Amalfi at about 13:30, departure at 16:30 and return to Rome around 20:30. It includes return transport, an escort for the day and planning support. Lunch and boat transfers are excluded. The group is up to 20, with a minimum age of 8. Timings are as listed and can shift.

Is an Amalfi day trip from Rome worth it?

It depends on what you want. If the goal is to say you have seen the coast, to take photographs and have a swim, and to be back in Rome that night, then yes, with realistic expectations. If the goal is to relax in a village, walk the paths, take a boat between towns or see Ravello, a day will feel rushed. Independent guides commonly recommend an overnight, and so do we. Our destination guide says the same: a very long day trip, better as an overnight.

The coast is steep, and the coastal road is winding. In July and August it can be gridlocked and the towns are very crowded. May, June and September are quieter.

How long does it take to get there?

Independently, a high-speed train from Rome Termini to Salerno takes under two hours according to our destination guide, followed by a ferry along the coast. Ferries run mostly from spring to autumn and can be cancelled in rough seas. Check seasonal timetables. By coach, the road time is longer, which is why a tour out and back stretches to fourteen hours. All in, expect roughly eight hours of travelling in a day trip.

Tour or train and ferry?

Guided tour Train and ferry yourself
Planning None You plan connections
Time in the towns Fixed, a few hours Flexible but limited by last trains
Risk Traffic on the coastal road Cancelled ferries, missed trains
Best for Those who want zero logistics Confident, flexible travellers

The independent route is ambitious as a day trip. Allow a buffer for the last train back, and check the ferry timetable before you set out.

Is Sorrento a good alternative?

Yes. Sorrento is easier to reach by train via Naples and the Circumvesuviana, has hotels and restaurants, and works as a base for a night or two. It is a gateway to the coast rather than the coast itself. If you have only one day and want to avoid the long drive, consider Pompeii instead, which is comparable in distance. Compare them in Pompeii vs Amalfi Coast day trip or see the Pompeii day trip from Rome hub.

What is included and what to bring

  • Included: return transport, an escort for the day and planning support.
  • Not included: lunch, boat transfers and tips.
  • Bring: swimwear, sun cream, a light layer for the morning, comfortable shoes (the lanes are steep) and cash for small purchases.
  • Motion: if you get carsick, the winding road is a real issue. Bring tablets and sit near the front.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Expecting to see Ravello, Positano and Amalfi in depth. You will see two towns briefly.
  • Travelling in July or August without accepting the crowds and heat.
  • Booking a combined Pompeii and Amalfi day. It is rushed.
  • Skimping on food planning. Lunch is not included.
  • Choosing the train and ferry route without checking the last connection back.

Who it is for

  • The day tour: couples and photographers with one free day in Rome who accept the length.
  • An overnight stay: anyone who wants to enjoy the coast rather than see it.
  • A different day trip: if you want less time in transit, browse Rome day trips.

Check current details: train and ferry timetables vary by season and change. Confirm them with the operators before you travel.

Frequently asked questions
