Should you pick Pompeii or the Amalfi Coast from Rome? If you only have one day, choose Pompeii: it is the easier journey and the stronger experience in a single visit. Choose the Amalfi Coast only if scenery and photographs matter more than depth, or plan to stay overnight so you are not spending most of the day in a vehicle.

Both trips leave early and return in the evening, and both are tiring. The difference is what you get for the hours spent. Use this page to decide, then see the full details in our Pompeii day trip from Rome and Amalfi Coast day trip from Rome pages.

The verdict

  • Pompeii is the easier day. The journey is shorter, you have a clear destination, and the site rewards a few hours of walking.
  • The Amalfi Coast works better with an overnight. The coastal road is slow and winding, so a day trip from Rome is mostly transport with a few hours of free time on the coast.
  • Do not try both without a plan. Combined tours exist in the market, usually running around 11 to 13 hours, and they are a rush. See below.

Which is the easier day trip from Rome?

Pompeii. The usual independent route is a high-speed train to Naples followed by a local train towards Pompeii, which fits into a long day. Our Pompeii day trip covers the transfers for you with return transport, site entry and a guide in Pompeii, in a small group of up to 20. You arrive around 09:30 and have a structured visit followed by free time.

The Amalfi Coast is not on a direct rail line from Rome. The final stretch is a winding road, with traffic that can slow things in high season. That is why most day trips set out around 06:30 and return about 14 hours later. If you are going to spend this much time moving, you want to spend it somewhere you can then linger.

How long is the drive from Rome to the Amalfi Coast?

Allow roughly four hours each way on a tour day. Our own itinerary has the coach leaving Rome at 06:30 and reaching Positano around 10:30, with the return leaving at 16:30 and arriving about 20:30. Treat this as a realistic planning figure, since traffic and weather vary.

Can you do Pompeii and Amalfi in one day from Rome?

Technically yes, but it is a stretch. Combined tours in the market run roughly 11 to 13 hours, which means you see the main ruins quickly, then pass along the coast with limited time in each town. You trade depth for a checklist. We do not list a combined tour; our two day trips are separate on purpose. If you want both, a better plan is to split them: spend one day in Pompeii from Rome, then stay on the coast for a night or two, using Sorrento as a base.

Is Sorrento a better base than Amalfi?

For most people, yes. Sorrento sits on the Bay of Naples, has direct rail links to Pompeii and Naples on the local line, and has more accommodation, which keeps prices more reasonable. Amalfi and Positano are prettier but more expensive, and getting between them depends on buses, ferries or taxis. If you plan to see both the ruins and the coast, use Sorrento for logistics and make a boat or bus day trip along the coast.

Choose Pompeii if…

  • You have only one free day and want the most for it.
  • You enjoy history, or you are travelling with children old enough to enjoy ruins (our listing sets a minimum age of 6).
  • You prefer a clear plan: guided walk first, then time at your own pace.

Practical points for Pompeii: according to the Pompeii archaeological park’s official site, entry operates with time slots, tickets are named, and only small bags (up to 30 x 30 x 15 cm) are allowed. The site has little shade, so bring water and a hat. For a head-to-head with a closer ancient site, see Ostia Antica vs Pompeii.

Choose the Amalfi Coast if…

  • You already know you want seaside scenery and photographs more than ruins.
  • You accept a very long day and will not be disappointed by limited time in each town.
  • You are visiting outside the busiest period. July and August bring the biggest crowds and the longest road delays.

Our Amalfi Coast day trip visits Positano and Amalfi town, with free time for lunch and swimming. Lunch and boat transfers are not included. It is a small-group trip of up to 20.

When to go

July and August bring the biggest crowds to both places and the hardest heat at Pompeii, where shade is scarce. Spring and early autumn are more comfortable for walking the ruins and for the coastal road. Winter can suit Pompeii, with fewer visitors, though rain makes the stone slippery; the coast is quieter, with some seasonal businesses closed. Whatever the season, the earlier slot is the cooler and calmer one.

What a realistic day looks like

On Pompeii, expect roughly three hours on the road in the morning, a guided walk, time to eat, then the drive back. On the Amalfi Coast, expect to spend about half the day in the vehicle, a first stop at Positano, time in Amalfi town for lunch, and an evening return. Neither day leaves much room to be flexible, so choose the one whose highlights you would be happiest to see in a few hours.

If you are travelling with children, Pompeii’s minimum age on our listing is 6 and the Amalfi Coast’s is 8, but the long coach time is the real constraint. Bring snacks and plan a quiet evening.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Picking the coast to save effort. The coast is gentler underfoot but the transport time is the biggest hurdle.
  • Leaving no time buffer for the return. Do not book an evening flight or a late dinner reservation on the day of the trip.
  • Forgetting sun protection at Pompeii. The site is exposed, particularly in summer.
  • Assuming day trips are cheaper than staying. Day trips are efficient but exhausting. A night away may be better value on enjoyment.

Check current details

Pompeii ticketing, slots, closures and any partial-access periods are set by the Parco archeologico di Pompei, so check the official site for current prices and hours. Train services are run by Trenitalia and local operators, so check timetables before an independent trip. Frequently asked questions

Should I visit Pompeii or the Amalfi Coast?

Choose Pompeii for a single day: it is easier to reach, has a clear purpose and rewards a few hours of walking. Choose the Amalfi Coast if scenery matters most, ideally with an overnight stay so you are not on the road most of the day.

Can you do Pompeii and Amalfi in one day from Rome?

It can be done on combined tours of roughly 11 to 13 hours, but both are rushed. You will see the main ruins briefly and have limited time on the coast. Splitting them over two days, with Sorrento as a base, is much more enjoyable.

Which is the easier day trip from Rome?

Pompeii. The journey is shorter and more direct, and a guided visit gives structure. The Amalfi Coast involves a long, winding road and, on our itinerary, about eight hours of travel in total.

How long is the drive from Rome to the Amalfi Coast?

Plan on about four hours each way. On our day trip the coach leaves Rome at 06:30 and reaches Positano around 10:30, and the return takes a similar time. Traffic and season can make it longer.

Is Sorrento a better base than Amalfi?

For most travellers, yes. Sorrento has better rail connections to Pompeii and Naples, more lodging choice and usually lower prices. Amalfi and Positano are more scenic but pricier and harder to move between.

When is Pompeii or the Amalfi Coast most crowded?

Both are busiest in July and August. The coast also gets road congestion in high season. Spring and early autumn are generally more comfortable for both.
