Catacombs of Rome Underground Tour

Beneath the Appian Way lie miles of tunnels where Rome’s early Christians and Jews buried their dead. Visiting them is a moving and atmospheric complement to the monuments above ground.
On this guided visit you walk through narrow corridors lined with burial niches, learn how the catacombs were dug into the soft volcanic rock, and see chapels with frescoes and early symbols. Your guide explains the beliefs and customs behind them and the myths that have grown up, such as the idea that Christians lived underground.
The temperature underground is cool all year, so bring a light layer. The floor is uneven and there are stairs. Because the catacombs close on different days, we arrange the visit to the one that is open on your date. Check current details when you enquire.
