You need a reservation for a timed slot to enter the Borghese Gallery, so book before you go. Slots last about two hours, and the Gallery limits numbers in each, which keeps the rooms uncrowded. You can book the official ticket yourself, or take a guided tour that includes the entry slot. Our selection here is small: one guided tour.

For the collection, the villa and the park, see our Borghese Gallery and Villa Borghese guide.

The official site charges a mandatory reservation fee on top of the entry price, including on free days. Prices change, so check the Galleria Borghese site for the current figures.

Yes. Entry is by reservation only, and slots can sell out, especially for morning times and in high season. The Gallery states that free days still require a reservation, and tickets for those days are released only shortly before. Walk-up entry is not something to count on.

How long can you stay?

A slot is about two hours. That is enough for the highlights: Bernini’s Apollo and Daphne and The Rape of Proserpina, Caravaggio’s David with the Head of Goliath, and Canova’s Pauline Bonaparte as Venus. Bags and coats go to the cloakroom, so arrive early for check-in. Entry is timed, so being late can cost you your slot.

Is a guided tour worth it?

If you know the collection, the official ticket is enough. If not, a guide helps, because the rooms are small and the sculptures close, and the stories behind them are the point. Our Borghese Gallery Guided Tour includes the timed entry ticket, a guide and headsets, lasts about two hours, and takes up to 12 people. It has morning and afternoon timed entry, and the meeting point is outside the Galleria Borghese entrance, confirmed after booking. Park activities, transport and tips are excluded. The minimum age is 5.

The slots are strict and limited, so enquire well ahead.

Roma Pass, free Sundays and discounts

  • Roma Pass: a reservation is still needed. Read is the Roma Pass worth it to decide whether it fits your trip.
  • Free first Sunday: according to the Gallery, free days need a reservation with the reservation fee, and tickets go on sale shortly before. See free Sundays in Rome.
  • Closing day: the Gallery is usually closed on Mondays. Check the official calendar.

Check current details: ticket prices, reservation fees, release windows and opening days change. Confirm them on the official Galleria Borghese site before booking.

Getting there and making a day of it

It is about a fifteen-minute walk from Spagna metro through the Pincio gardens, or take bus 52 or 53 to the Pinciana gate. Afterwards you can walk Villa Borghese park, rent a rowing boat, or go on to the Pincio terrace. The Gallery is a good wet-weather choice and a calm break from the ancient sites. Pair it with a tour of the ancient sites using Colosseum tours or other skip-the-line tickets.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Leaving booking until you arrive in Rome.
  • Arriving at the slot time with no allowance for check-in and the cloakroom.
  • Assuming a Roma Pass or free day skips the reservation.
  • Bringing a large bag.
  • Booking an official ticket and expecting a guide.

Who each option is for

  • Official ticket: confident art visitors and repeat visitors.
  • Guided tour: first-timers, couples and anyone who wants the story behind Bernini and Caravaggio.
