What is the best full-day tour from Rome? For most people it is Pompeii, with Florence by high-speed train a close second if you prefer art, and a private highlights day if you want to stay in the city. Full-day tours run from six hours for a private city day to 14 hours for the Amalfi Coast, so the real choice is how long you want to be out.
The rule we used: a “full-day tour” on this page is any tour in our catalogue with a listed duration of six hours or more, day trips included. Seven tours qualify. We left out our hop-on hop-off bus pass: it is listed as 24 hours, but that is how long the pass is valid, not the length of a guided day. Half-day options are on our half-day tours in Rome page.

Day trips from Rome
Pompeii
The Pompeii day trip leaves around 06:30, reaches the site about 09:30 and returns to Rome around 19:00. It includes site entry, a guide in Pompeii and return transport, and the optional Vesuvius add-on is excluded. It is the easiest long day, because the destination is clear. See our Pompeii day trip hub.
Florence
The Florence day trip is a 12-hour day by high-speed train with timed Accademia entry, a guided old-town walk and free time for lunch. Uffizi entry is excluded. It is a lot for a day, but the train is comfortable, and it works for art lovers.
Tivoli
At seven hours, the Tivoli tour is the shortest day trip. It covers Hadrian’s Villa and the fountains of Villa d’Este, with transport, a guide and entry tickets included. It is a good compromise if you want a day out without a very early alarm or a very late return.
Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast day trip takes 14 hours and is our longest. It visits Positano and Amalfi town, and lunch and boat transfers are not included. Compare it with Pompeii in Pompeii vs Amalfi Coast.
Orvieto
The Orvieto day trip goes by train, includes a guide and a wine tasting, and visits the cathedral area and underground caves. It is for adults only (our listing sets a minimum age of 18).
If you want to stay in the city, the private Rome highlights tour is a six-hour tour with a flexible start and a custom route, for up to eight people. It includes a private guide, but entry tickets are listed as excluded. Read our private tours in Rome page for context.
Cruise passengers should look at the private driver from Civitavecchia, which covers the port transfer, a customisable route and a return to the ship on time. It is a vehicle and driver, not a guide.
Can you do the Vatican and Colosseum in one day?
Yes, if you are selective. The Vatican Museums and the Colosseum area sit on opposite sides of the centre, and both take around three hours each with a guide. A private day gives you the most control, while two timed tickets also work. We do not list a single combined Vatican and Colosseum tour, so the route to take is either a private tour or two bookings. Our Vatican and Colosseum in one day page explains how to sequence it.
How long are day trips from Rome?
From our data: seven hours for Tivoli, ten for Orvieto, twelve for Pompeii and Florence, and fourteen for the Amalfi Coast. Expect a meeting point near Termini or a pick-up location confirmed after booking. Travel is a large part of each day, so keep the evening free.
How much does a full-day tour from Rome cost?
Our day trips start at EUR 85 for Tivoli and rise to EUR 135 for the Amalfi Coast, with Orvieto from EUR 99, Pompeii from EUR 119 and Florence from EUR 129. A private day costs much more because the price covers a guide for your group: our private highlights tour starts at EUR 349, and the cruise-port driver from EUR 290. Check what is excluded: lunch, tips and some entry tickets are not included.
Choose a full day if…
You are staying several days and want one trip beyond Rome.
You prefer a guide who handles trains and tickets for you.
You are comfortable with an early start and a long return.
If you have only two or three days in Rome, a half-day tour is usually a better use of time. See best tours in Rome.
Check current details: departure times, prices and availability are shown on each tour card.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best full-day tour of Rome?
If you want to stay in the city, a private highlights day gives the most control. For a day out, Pompeii is our top-ranked day trip. Which is best depends on whether you want depth in Rome or a change of scene.
Can you do the Vatican and Colosseum in one day?
Yes, with planning. Each takes around three hours with a guide and they are on opposite sides of the centre. A private tour or two well-timed bookings both work, and the day will be busy.
What are the best full-day tours from Rome?
Pompeii, Florence by high-speed train and Tivoli are the most popular choices on our list. Amalfi is beautiful but very long, and Orvieto suits adults who like wine.
How long are day trips from Rome?
On our listings they run from 7 hours for Tivoli to 14 hours for the Amalfi Coast, with Orvieto at 10 and Pompeii and Florence at 12. Plan for an early start.
How much does a full-day tour from Rome cost?
Our small-group day trips start between EUR 85 and EUR 135. Private options start higher. Lunch, tips and some entry tickets are extra, so check the excluded list on each card.
Is the hop-on hop-off bus a full-day tour?
No. The pass is valid for 24 hours but it is a transport pass, not a guided day. We therefore leave it off this list.
